Everton start this season’s League Cup with a trip to Preston North End of the Championship, a side that they are very familiar with over the last couple of decades especially after manager David Moyes, left Deepdale to take over at Goodison Park in 2002.
Moyes caught some flak last year with his approach to the cups, given that is the Toffees’ only chance at smelling any silverware. Club CEO Angus Kinnear seemed to indicate that deep runs in the Cups are part of the expected standard, which then
made Moyes pre-game comments about compromising league survival with a long cup campaign slightly awkward.
Hosts Preston have endured a difficult start to their Championship campaign, going down 2-1 to Bolton before being defeated 3-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers this last weekend. They play at Deepdale which was built in 1875 and in use since 1878. The stadiun is recognised as being one of the oldest continuously used football stadiums in the world, although the club’s claim that it is the oldest is contested.
The injury situation remains about the same for the Blues with Christian Norgaard and Tim Iroegbunam still out, while James Garner is progressing well but still not ready to start.
