Joshua Kimmich was infuriated. After Rasenballsport Leipzig scored a goal to cut down the deficit, the Bayern Munich player went to the referee and implored him to realize that a mistake had been made and that Leipzig had illegally performed a free kick leading up to the goal, so the goal should be disallowed. The referee, Florian Badstübner, had seen it all before and dealt with it. Still, Kimmich did not let up, to the extent that he received a yellow card for his protests. Awarding yellow cards
for protest, is of course, also not especially abnormal.
What is abnormal is that referee realized he had been wrong.
After asking the VAR to check again, it was clear Kimmich was right and the goal was disallowed. But the yellow card, awarded for Kimmich’s persistent and correct protesting, remained.
This was something Stefan Effenberg simply could not understand. The former Germany international addressed the issue on Sport1’s “Doppelpass”, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
“It’s a joke that Kimmich’s yellow card still applies. That’s completely unacceptable. I expect the DFB to rescind the yellow card. They [Bayern players] were absolutely right to complain so loudly. The officials look very, very bad because it was a set piece. There was no scramble. I expect the referees to recognize something like that.”
Let’s see if the DFB do deign to change their minds. But odds are, that yellow card will not be rescinded.
