Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl took some umbrage with Oliver Kahn’s assertion that Jamal Musiala should skip the World Cup and focus on getting himself right for the rest of his career.
“You can’t tell an athlete to skip the World Cup and do something else. Jamal is going his own way. We all saw the injury, which was very complicated and had lasting effects. We knew that reintegration would take time, both physically and mentally,” Eberl told Sky Germany’s Kerry Hau (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
“At some point, the moment will come when something extraordinary happens on the pitch and everything else will be blown away. Having such a great player as Jamal Musiala, healthy and in form — he’ll be a real asset to us at the World Cup. Even if he’s not at 100% top form, we’re still happy to have him on the bench to create exactly those special moments.”
The handling of Musiala’s injury is something that has been debated by fans, but Eberl’s statement of “Jamal is going his own way” could be very telling. Musiala’s power within the club has grown substantially over the years and likely hit is apex when he inked his new, long-term contract last year.
Rumored to be like Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer with regard to his desire to always be in the lineup, Musiala was said to be pushing for his early return, which looks — as of now — to have backfired.
With such a valuable young footballer, who can be a top player in the world if he gets back to full health, there likely could have been more restraint used in his comeback. While the road ahead of Musiala is long, there is no evidence as of yet that he cannot make it all the way back to his previous health and form. Still, there is chance he does not make it back to that level given the severity of the injury — only time will tell.
