Every failed job usually has a scapegoat in sports. Many managers are quick to realize that their time is short after crashing out of a tournament or just general failures in their roles. While Julian Nagelsmann needed a bit of an extra nudge to step down from his role with the DFB, many expected that Rudi Völler would go with him.
However, breaking reports from Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg indicate that the former German striker will be staying with the DFB as the sporting director until the end
of his current contract. His current contract goes until in 2028, including the European Championship in the United Kingdom.
Perhaps the biggest revelation here is that it is actually Klopp’s desire for Völler to stay with the DFB as the reason that the sporting director has remained in his seat.
Jürgen Klopp appears to already have a big influence on the decisions of the national team, which makes the reports of him becoming the German national team manager seemingly confirmed at this point. It is great to see German legends continue to run the DFB, but if Klopp were to fail as a manager as well, Völler would likely not be spared should the team repeat their recent performance.
