When the summer hits, clubs worldwide hit the international scene for tours, which are as much about marketing as getting players to shake off the rust.
During a World Cup year, the traveling parties always tend to look a little different, but that is not deterring one promoter from attempting to host a summer version of Der Klassiker — Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayern Munich in Australia. However, Borussia Dortmund is hesitant to pull the trigger on an agreement:
On Saturday (6:30 p.m., Sky), Borussia
Dortmund hosts FC Bayern in a top-of-the-table clash. This summer, the classic match could take place in Australia. As the tz has learned, a sports promoter wants to bring a game between the German record champions and BVB to Australia. It would be a friendly match.
Following their 2024 tour of South Korea’s capital, Seoul, and their visits to Tokyo and Singapore the year before, FC Bayern Munich will head to China as part of their pre-season preparations. Stops in South Korea or Thailand are also under discussion. Borussia Dortmund is also expected to tour Asia again this summer. For both Bayern and Dortmund, a side trip to Australia would theoretically be possible, and certainly lucrative.
Promoter TEG Sport has been bringing Europe’s biggest football clubs to Australia for years. Their website states: “TEG Sport is now responsible for helping major global brands enter new markets in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Great Britain and the United States, including Liverpool, Manchester United, FC Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Wrexham AFC, Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund.”
According to information from the tz newspaper, Dortmund is still hesitant.
BFW Commentary
This summer will be a cluster of epic proportions. With the World Cup going on, any player with an extended run in the tournament will likely skip any summer tour, leaving a scaled down group of youngsters and non-national team veterans to push forward for those friendlies.
Clearly, it would not be the star-studded affair that many would want to see (just ask anyone who paid to watch Bayern Munich vs. Juventus in the 2018 International Champions Cup tour in the United States).
That said, the game would represent a great chance for marketing and revenue generation even if it lacks star power. What should Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund do?
