The Round of 16 is underway, kicked off today by Morocco’s 3-0 win over Canada and France’s 1-0 defeat of Paraguay. Today’s games feature Erling Haaland and Norway against Brazil in New Jersey, and Harry Kane and England against Mexico in Mexico City.
Brazil started off their tournament with a 1-1 draw against Morocco (where Morocco looked the better side), then 3-0 wins over Haiti and Scotland in turn. Their Round of 32 match started with Japan taking a 1-0 lead, but Brazil mounted a comeback to finish
with a 2-1 win. Erling Haaland and Norway started with a 4-1 thrashing of Iraq, then a 3-2 win over Senegal and a 1-4 loss to France, before overcoming Ivory Coast 2-1 in the Round of 32. The Norwegian supporters’ rowing celebrations have been enjoyable. Brazil has lost six straight World Cup knockout games against European teams; their last win was the 2002 World Cup final.
England began their World Cup with a blistering 4-2 win over Croatia, followed up with a 0-0 draw with Ghana and a 2-0 victory over Panama. The Three Lions trailed DR Congo for most of the game before Harry Kane provided an equalizer and a winning goal late on to push them on to the round of 16. Mexico played the tournament’s first game, a 2-0 win over South Africa, and also got wins against South Korea (1-0) and Czechia (3-0), before defeating Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32. Winning their group allowed Mexico to continue playing in their capital city this far, including this game against England. They have never lost a World Cup game at Estadio Azteca.
