This weekend was jam-packed with NWSL action. Check out the top three goals and saves in terms of the difference between their post-shot expected goals (PSxG) and expected goals (xG).
Basically, these are the goals where the player taking the shot added the most value just on shot quality and the saves where the keeper was best able to navigate this unexpected extra shot quality.
Goal 1: Mina Tanaka vs. San Diego Wave (0.83 PSxG on 0.06 xG)
Tanaka draws her team level with a shot so clean that all goalkeeper Sandra Paños can do is watch it hit the back of the net.
Goal 2: Cristiana Girelli vs. Houston Dash (0.92 PSxG on 0.15 xG)
Girelli remains focused and alert, getting the rebound to score the game-winner for her team.
Goal 3: Aïssata Traoré vs. North Carolina Courage (0.92 PSxG on 0.19 xG)
Traoré recovers well and beats defenders to the rebound to draw her team level late in the game.
Save 1: Sandy MacIver vs. Orlando Pride (0.76 PSxG on 0.24 xG)
MacIver has smart positioning and quick reflexes to ensure that Orlando’s give-and-go play doesn’t amount to anything as she keeps her team’s deficit at one.
Save 2: Katie Atkinson vs. Houston Dash (0.51 PSxG on 0.09 xG)
Atkinson has a strong diving save to keep her team from conceding a fifth goal (for now).
Save 3: Jane Campbell vs. Bay FC (0.45 PSxG on 0.03 xG)
Campbell is able to read Claire Hutton’s wide open shot and keep things level for now.
