As we mentioned in the buildup to today’s Round 15 matchup against upstart Como, the little club by the famous lake shouldn’t be taken lightly. Thanks to the combined powers of Cesc Fabregas on the touchline
and Nico Paz on the pitch, the Biancoblù are holding their own in Serie A this season. Heading into this fixture, Como compiled 24 points through 14 matches, sporting a +7 goal differential, proving beyond a shadow of the doubt they are more than a feel-good story.
Still, with the experience and talent battle tipped in Roma’s direction, Gian Piero Gasperini’s club was favored to win tonight’s tilt at the Stadio Olimpico. And while we no longer consider Como a provincial club, the first half followed the typical script for Roma when they do face a “lesser” club: possession aplenty, shots at the ready but nothing to show for it.
In past years, Roma would have kept pushing the issue as the match went on, becoming more frustrated and visibly anxious with every missed opportunity. However, unlike many disappointing “they should have won that” matches, the Giallorossi stayed composed, selecting their chances carefully rather than taking shots just for the sake of it.
And in the 60th minute, their patience paid off as Matías Soulé settled a redirected ball with his chest before sliding it over to Wesley for the match-winner; a well-struck low shot towards the far post.
Thanks to Wesley’s well-placed shot, Roma secured three critical points today, gaining sole possession of fourth place and pulling within three points of league-leading Inter Milan.
