Yes, it’s the dead period for the NFL, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to talk about.
Recently, CBS Sports had a hypothetical trade proposal, sending Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Justin Jefferson to the Las Vegas Raiders for a first and third round pick.
The proposal Jefferson will seek to leave Minnesota by the 2028 offseason.
Again, this is all a proposed trade and there is no substance to it. But that doesn’t mean Jefferson won’t get to the point where he will want to leave the Vikings.
If Fernado Mendoza is the real deal and the Raiders don’t add a true No. 1 wide receiver, a Jefferson pursuit would make sense. But I’m not sure this would have to wait until after the 2027 season. If Jefferson is unsatisfied with the Vikings’ quarterback situation after this season, he could ask to get traded sooner.
It would behoove the Raiders to get it done sooner than later if they want to make a Jefferson trade a reality. I do think it would likely cost more than a first and a third. Jefferson will only be 28 next offseason and he would be a huge addition to a Las Vegas offense, which is led by head coach Klint Kubiak, who was Jefferson’s Vikings’ offensive coordinator in 2021.
Jefferson is playing on a four-year, $140 million contract that runs through 2028. Any deal would likely come with an adjusted contract for his new team. The Raiders will likely be giving tight end Brock Bowers a massive new deal next year and have other long-term deals. So, it would come at a price.
Also, next year’s draft is expected to great draft. Thus, the Raiders may not want to part with two premium picks for a veteran and draft their own top wide receiver.
It’s an interesting scenario and worth exploring.
