Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin continues to build his 2027 recruiting class. On Thursday night, a surprise for the Hokies, as four-star cornerback Chase Johnson revealed he was committing to Virginia Tech.
The 5-foot-10, 150-pound Johnson is from Swainsboro,
Georgia, and plays at the Emanuel County Institute. Johnson held a reported 30 offers, including ones from Georgia, Auburn, Florida State, Miami, Tennessee and a host of others.
Virginia Tech didn’t officially offer Johnson until last month, and he’s scheduled to come to Blacksburg for an official visit on May 29. Johnson also had official visits lined up with Louisville and Florida State.
Johnson will play cornerback or nickel for the Hokies. He is the 10th commitment for Virginia Tech’s 2027 recruiting class and is the first defensive back. Johnson is a four-star prospect per Rivals/On3. However, 247Sports has him listed as a three-star prospect. The 247Sports composite rankings have Johnson as a four-star.
The Hokies most recently added a commitment from Roanoke (Va.) wide receiver Demarcus Brown, flipping him from his commitment to Virginia. Next week, top-100 quarterback Peter Bourque is scheduled to make his college decision. The Hokies are a finalist for Bourque, alongside Georgia. Penn State and others also remain in the mix. Ohio State most recently picked up its pursuit of Bourque.
As for Johnson, this is a big pickup for the Hokies.
