In this series, BFW looks back at all the members of the 2014 World Cup-winning Germany men’s national team — players and coaches — reflecting on their performance back then and checking in on where they are today. We’ve got the revered midfield legend and the namesake of one of our post-match awards: the Fußballgott himself, Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Bastian Schweinsteiger’s role in 2014
Basti played in all but one of Germany’s games in that tournament, against Portugal in the opening game. He made a substitute appearance in the 2-2 draw
against Ghana, but from the last group match against the USMNT all the way to the final, he started in midfield. The then 29-year-old was instrumental in all the knockout matches as Germany romped to victory, beating Argentina in the final after roughly 130 minutes of play.
What is Bastian Schweinsteiger doing now?
Basti retired from the national team in 2016, and from club football in 2019 after spending most of his career at Bayern Munich, followed by Manchester United and Chicago Fire. His post-playing career mostly includes punditry, fitness, travel, and regularly watching Bayern and Man United whenever he can.
