Michigan is officially searching for its next quarterback commit of the 2027 class following the decommitment of four-star Peter Bourque last Tuesday. So far, the Wolverines have extended offers to a couple prospects, with one of them recently discussing his interest in the Maize and Blue.
New QB target talks offer, interest in Michigan
Offensive coordinator Jason Beck and quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. wasted no time offering new targets at the quarterback position following Bourque’s decommitment. About an hour after that unfolded, they sent
an offer to four-star Kamden Lopati. One day later, they offered another four-star in California native Dane Weber.
Much like Lopati, Weber (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) is a dual-threat at the quarterback position. He had a great junior season with 3,645 passing yards and 41 touchdowns, in addition to 688 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. He also has a preexisting relationship with Detmer and Beck dating back to when they were at Utah; in fact, Utah was the first DI program to offer him a scholarship.
“Me talking to him, it’s almost like talking to a friend because I’ve known him for however long now, so there’s no real awkwardness or anything like that,” Weber told On3’s Ethan McDowell ($). “But it was just great to hear them reassure their interest in me.
“I’ve always wanted to play for them, regardless of what logo is attached to it, so it’s awesome to hear them reaffirm the interest and officially extend it.”
Up next is an unofficial visit to Michigan from March 23-25. If all goes well, expect him to schedule an official visit for sometime in June.
“I want to see how they adapt their styles to the new team and the new quarterbacks, and also how the facilities are, even just the area around because I’ve never been there, so I kind of want to get a feel for what it’s like,” Weber said.
Michigan is battling Oregon, UCLA, Cal, Kansas, Kansas State, Cincinnati and Stanford for Weber’s commitment.
Recent LB offered excited to visit Michigan
The Wolverines expanded their linebacker board last week when they offered 2027 three-star Ethan Hauser. The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder from Buford, Georgia has a national offer sheet that includes Alabama, Texas, Oregon, Georgia, USC, Florida, Florida State and many other great programs.
“I received a call from coach Alex Whittngham, who let me know he loved my tape and athleticism and wanted to offer me,” Hauser told The Michigan Insider’s Brice Marich ($). “I was genuinely very excited. Michigan is a big deal. Glad to know that they think highly of me.
“There is definitely real interest. I love the legacy of the program and the commitment to winning and being great. I really love coach Whittingham’s energy and enthusiasm.”
Moving forward, Hauser plans to take a trip to Ann Arbor on April 9 to see a spring practice. Additionally, he said that he is “definitely excited about meeting the staff and learning as much as possible about the program and academics” and that Michigan is a “high contender and definitely in the mix.”
Four-star DB locks in spring visit
Last month, Michigan defensive coordinator Jay Hill and safeties coach Tyler Stockton paid a visit to the home of 2027 four-star safety Gavin Williams. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder from Damien High School in La Verne, California is an early top priority for the new coaching staff, and those efforts are paying off.
According to TMI’s Marich ($), Williams has locked in an unofficial visit to Michigan for April 9. He will be able to meet the coaches and see a practice up close that day.
“Yeah, it went great meeting the coaches face to face for the first time,” Williams told TMI back in January. “The main message was that I am a high priority for them and that if I want to be developed and get a great education Michigan is the place to be. They showed me how and who they have developed at safety and that they can make first rounders. I’m going to take a visit out there this spring.
“Yeah, the track record speaks for itself. They told me they have had the most interceptions in back-to-back years in the nation and have put out all Americans and all conference out of BYU. They also developed Eric Weddle at Utah.”
Williams is the No. 145 overall prospect on the composite. Other schools recruiting him include Alabama, USC, Texas A&M, Washington, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Miami and many more.
