When WWE heads for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia early next month, assuming it still happens, of course, they’ll do so with a card that features two champion vs. champion matches for the Crown Jewel championship. That means World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns will be taking on WWE Champion Sami Zayn.
Are they going to spend much time actually building to this match? Probably not.
That was evidenced by this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, where Zayn made mention of the matchup and pushed off actually
doing anything to promote it until Monday Night Raw next week when they’ll be in the same building. Instead, we got United States Champion Trick Williams interrupting to say he wants to settle up on the disrespectful interaction the two had a couple weeks back.
Zayn went off:
Johnny Gargano stepped in and acted as a go-between, leading to an impromptu match. Trick Willy won that match and then stared down the champion.
It’s hard telling if this is going anywhere, or if they’re simply buying some time to get to the bigger matchups. I’m going to choose to be encouraged by WWE putting Williams in there with the champ and making sure his name is attached to the main event scene, even if he hasn’t actually made it there yet.
