While the historical scales between AS Roma and Manchester United are firmly tilted in the English club’s favor, given the disparity between their current forms, the Giallorossi must be considered favorites in tonight’s Champions League fixture at Old Trafford. The north of England hasn’t always been kind to the capital club, but Gian Piero Gasperini’s group enters this fixture having lost only one match in all competitions, the now infamous 4-3 defeat to Real Madrid at the Olimpico last month.
United,
meanwhile, have won only two matches all season long and are currently riding a three-match losing skid. Neither side has enjoyed much success in the Champions League Group Phase thus far, so in some respects, their domestic records are irrelevant, but for perhaps the first time in this brief rivalry, Roma has the advantage.
Of course, that was before news leaked out that Pierluigi Gollini, who was stepping in for the injured Mile Svilar, would miss today’s match, giving seldom-seen third keeper Devis Vasquez his first of Roma action.
