Fantasy Premier League managers have some important decisions to make ahead of Gameweek 8. With several popular players attracting significant transfer activity, the challenge is separating genuine opportunities from short-term hype. However, the most popular player isn’t automatically the best player to buy. Fixture difficulty, expected minutes, injury concerns, and upcoming opponents should all influence your decisions.
With Gameweek 8 beginning Friday, October 23, managers need to identify the
transfers that can deliver immediate points without compromising their squads over the coming weeks.
Here are five players worth considering, along with the popular moves you should approach carefully.
1. Bryan Mbeumo (£7.8m) — Manchester United
Fixture: Bournemouth (Home)
Bryan Mbeumo is one of the most appealing midfield options to consider heading into Gameweek 8. The Manchester United midfielder has a home fixture against Bournemouth, giving him an opportunity to deliver attacking returns in front of his home supporters. His price also makes him a potential alternative for managers looking to replace an expensive midfielder without sacrificing too much attacking potential.
Mbeumo’s appeal goes beyond a single favorable fixture. He offers an attacking option in a Manchester United side capable of creating opportunities, and his current price leaves room for managers to distribute funds elsewhere in their squads.
There is, however, a reason to plan beyond Gameweek 8. Manchester United’s subsequent fixtures include Chelsea, Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Brentford. That run could make it harder for Mbeumo to maintain the same appeal every week.
2. Pascal Groß (£6.2m) — Brighton
Fixture: Liverpool (Away)
Pascal Groß has emerged as one of the most popular transfer targets ahead of Gameweek 8. The Brighton midfielder has attracted substantial interest from FPL managers, and his £6.2m price puts him within reach of teams searching for value in midfield.
Groß offers a different proposition from the more expensive premium midfielders. Rather than committing a large portion of your budget to one player, you can use him as part of a balanced squad while keeping funds available for premium attackers.
Popularity alone, however, should not determine your decision. Brighton face Liverpool away this week, which is not an especially comfortable fixture for a player whose appeal depends partly on attacking returns. Managers should also consider Brighton’s upcoming schedule rather than judging the transfer exclusively on the current gameweek.
If Groß has been consistently involved in Brighton’s attacking play, he could still provide value over several weeks. But the fixture against Liverpool makes him a less straightforward short-term purchase than his transfer numbers might suggest.
3. Maxim De Cuyper (£5.3m) — Brighton
Fixture: Liverpool (Away)
Maxim De Cuyper is another Brighton player attracting significant attention from FPL managers. At £5.3m, the defender offers a potential route into Brighton’s defense without requiring the budget associated with some of the more expensive defensive assets.
The appeal of a defender like De Cuyper is that his returns need not depend entirely on clean sheets. If he is playing in an advanced role and contributing to Brighton’s attacks, he can offer additional routes to points through attacking involvement.
His recent transfer activity suggests that managers are increasingly interested in that combination of price and potential. The official Premier League transfer report listed De Cuyper among Gameweek 8’s five most popular incoming players on October 21. His price had also risen to £5.3m following a price increase reported the previous day. That movement is a reminder that popular players can become more expensive quickly. Nevertheless, there is little value in rushing into a transfer simply to avoid a possible £0.1m increase.
Brighton’s trip to Liverpool is the main drawback this week. Managers considering De Cuyper should evaluate his likely starting role, attacking position, and Brighton’s defensive prospects before buying him.
A defender can still deliver attacking returns in a difficult fixture, but the clean-sheet opportunity may be less attractive than it would be against a weaker opponent.
4. Marcus Tavernier (£6.2m) — Bournemouth
Fixture: Manchester United (Away)
Marcus Tavernier has become another popular midfield target ahead of Gameweek 8. The Bournemouth midfielder offers an alternative to the more widely discussed premium options, and his £6.2m price makes him accessible to managers working with a limited transfer budget.
Tavernier’s appeal rests on his potential to contribute to Bournemouth’s attacking play while costing considerably less than many of the midfielders at the top of the price range. For managers looking to replace an underperforming midfielder, he could be a useful option. However, his upcoming fixture deserves careful consideration.
Bournemouth travel to Manchester United in Gameweek 8. Although the matchup does not automatically rule Tavernier out, it makes this a less obvious week to expect a major return. However, a player can attract plenty of transfers without necessarily representing the best long-term investment. The key question is whether Tavernier offers enough attacking potential over the next few gameweeks to justify using a transfer on him now.
If the answer is yes, his price could make him a useful addition. If you are buying him only because he is trending, holding your transfer may be the smarter decision.
5. Morgan Rogers (£8.0m) — Chelsea
Fixture: Tottenham Hotspur (Home)
Morgan Rogers completes our top five, offering another midfield option for managers assessing the most popular transfers ahead of Gameweek 8. Rogers has attracted considerable transfer activity, and his £8.0m price places him in a range where managers must compare him carefully with other established midfield options. At this price, a player needs to offer more than occasional attacking returns. Consistent involvement, reliable minutes, and a clear role in his team’s attack are important considerations.
Chelsea host Tottenham in Gameweek 8, a fixture that could provide opportunities for attacking players on both sides. However, managers should avoid assuming that a home fixture automatically makes a player a strong purchase. The quality of the opposition, the player’s expected role, and recent performances all matter.
Rogers is particularly worth considering if you already have a balanced squad and want to strengthen your midfield without making several additional transfers. Before buying him, compare his likely output with that of Mbeumo and other midfielders in a similar price bracket. If another option offers a better combination of expected minutes, attacking involvement, and fixtures, there is no reason to follow the crowd.
Final FPL Gameweek 8 Transfer Tips
Before making your final decision, check the latest injury updates, expected lineups, and player prices. A popular transfer is not necessarily a profitable one, and preserving a free transfer can sometimes be more valuable than making a move for the sake of it.
Our Gameweek 8 recommendation: Prioritize Bryan Mbeumo, compare Pascal Groß and Maxim De Cuyper against your existing squad, and avoid chasing transfer trends without checking the underlying reasons.
