Welp, here we go again, just in a different way for the Cleveland Browns and DE Myles Garrett. Last year, it was a trade demand and a lot of talk about where Garrett could land. The Browns were very clear that they would not be dealing Garrett and, in the end, gave him a contract extension.
Last year, we looked at a number of trade options, including with the Green Bay Packers to acquire picks, QB Malik Willis, and WR Christian Watson. Even after the contract extension, the idea that the Dallas Cowboys
could still trade for Garrett made some sense.
This offseason, a change in Garrett’s contract, not a trade demand, has rumors swirling once again. A deal could be difficult to pull off, but a large swath of the NFL should be interested in making a trade with Cleveland. Given the salary cap details, a deal is more likely after June 1st and could be easier for teams because draft picks will be for 2027 and beyond, potentially quite a few years later.
Given Garrett’s age, contract, and desire to win (he has a no-trade clause), here are the top five teams that should be calling the Browns about a Garrett trade (in no particular order):
Myles Garrett to the New England Patriots
Not only did the Patriots make it to the Super Bowl last year, but HC Mike Vrabel spent a year in Cleveland with Garrett. Young QB Drake Maye was a top MVP candidate last year, and New England is full of young talent who could all take a big step forward with Garrett causing so much havoc.
While Vrabel runs a 3-4 scheme, Garrett can be used in a variety of ways and already rushes the passer from a standup position quite often.
Myles Garrett to the Buffalo Bills
Quite different than where the Patriots are in their building process, the Bills have QB Josh Allen already in his prime and need to capitalize. With Joe Brady taking over as the new head coach, giving the physically gifted Allen the most physically gifted defender in the NFL would make a lot of sense. Garrett, like Allen, often takes over games by himself, which would open things up for other defenders to make big plays.
Myles Garrett to the San Francisco 49ers
Talk about a team that is always trying to get better and isn’t afraid to make big decisions, the Niners are always in play for big moves, have a roster that is getting older and needs to win now, plus Kyle Shanahan is one of the most respected coaches in the NFL. Adding Garrett after adding veteran WR Mike Evans this offseason could put San Fran in a position to leapfrog the defending Super Bowl champions in their division, the Seattle Seahawks.
Myles Garrett to the Detroit Lions
With Garrett still owning a piece of the Cleveland Cavaliers, why not stay nearby while joining an aggressive coach, a talented offense, and causing all sorts of havoc with DE Aidan Hutchinson? Garrett’s no-trade clause could come into play if he has reservations about QB Jared Goff’s upside, but the Lions have been aggressive in making moves and generally do not seem afraid of much of anything.
Myles Garrett to the Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles won a Super Bowl with a dominant defensive line. Browns GM Andrew Berry has a close relationship with Philadelphia GM Howie Roseman, who employs Andrew’s twin brother, Adam Berry, as well. The Eagles could ship out WR AJ Brown after June 1st, which could help offset both the trade haul going back to Cleveland and some of the salary cap-related issues. Philly is always willing to swing a trade, and Roseman’s relationship with Berry has to help.
Myles Garrett to the Dallas Cowboys
As we wrote last offseason, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones loves big moves, and Garrett is from Texas. Dallas also needs to replace Micah Parsons after dealing him away last year, and showed interest in a trade for Maxx Crosby earlier this offseason. Garrett is a better player, overall, than Crosby, and Jones could continue to find himself in the headlines for bringing Garrett “home” to Texas while also improving the team’s biggest area of need.
IF the Browns are willing to trade Garrett, which team do you think should be the most aggressive in trade offers? Which teams do you think the Brown star defender would have an interest in going to?
