It didn’t take long in his first season as a Blue Devil for people to get that Maliq Brown was…unusual. Brown, who transferred in from conference rival Syracuse, immediately showed superb defensive instincts.
He got in the passing lanes like no one else and was a brilliant presence off the bench.
Unfortunately, injuries disrupted his season, but we got a very good idea of what Brown, the subject of the latest Chronicle profile
, could do.From the Chronicle: “Head coach Jon Scheyer has praised him as a ‘defensive menace,’ and it’s not hard to see why. Brown anticipates passes, reads eyes and forces turnovers that then reignite Duke on the fast break. His energy and hustle are both contagious and restless…Brown…is reliable, not flashy. Brown’s understated statistics belie his enormous impact. For the second-straight year, the senior will be a leader amidst a young core of freshmen and sophomore talents who lack the Syracuse transfer’s experience as a three-year veteran of top-level college basketball.”
He’s not expected to start this season, but don’t let that distract you. Brown is going to be an absolute beast off the bench. Let’s hope he stays healthy this year because he could be a huge factor in Duke’s success.
