Like mock NBA drafts, bracketology is basically pointless, at least this far out. Who knows what could happen between now and Selection Sunday? It’s ridiculous…but like mock drafts, it’s fun to think about
bracketology. And you can get some basic ideas locked in, even if some of the finer points, or maybe reasoning of the committee, is hard to grasp before the official field is announced.
Keep that in mind because while it’s not yet February, CBS has a very intriguing East Regional posted. Ready for this?
It has Duke at #1, and also in the regional…Iowa State at #2, Illinois at #3, Florida at #4, Kansas at #5, Kentucky at #6, and UNC at #7.
So by our count, the #3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 seeds all have scores to settle with the Blue Devils.
Obviously that can’t happen but in a dream scenario for the NCAA and television, Duke could play, in order, either Kansas or Florida then either Kentucky or Illinois and the winner of that matchup and UNC.
It’s hard to imagine what TV would prefer: Duke vs. Kansas with Darryn Peterson? Or a rematch with the Gators? Illinois getting a crack at Duke after last year’s utter humiliation in the Garden? Or Kentucky or UNC?
Of course, given how erratic the Wildcats and Tar Heels have been this season, we might bet on #2 Iowa State because the Cyclones have looked much better than either Kentucky or UNC.
No matter how you look at it though the publicity would be immense and the ratings spectacular. Let’s goooooo!
