Their own partnership with Netflix got WWE into the Tony Hinchcliffe business, and the popular insult comic has been shouted out on big episodes of Raw and hosted last year’s Roast of WrestleMania. That show was a live-only experience for fans who were in Las Vegas for WrestleMania 41, but audio leaked and not all of the roastees appeared to be in on the joke.
With that little bit of controversy adding to Hinchcliffe’s existing notoriety, and due to logistical issues caused by SummerSlam’s date and location,
a follow-up announced for WWE’s Biggest Party of the Summer was called off. But with WWE and Netflix “synergizing” as planned (unlike another billion-dollar media rights relationship), they’re not done working with Hinchcliffe. A late night post-event show makes a lot more sense for a long weekend in Las Vegas than a single-night PLE in New Jersey, so WWE will bring the comedian and host back for this year’s WrestleMania 42. They’re ditching the potentially-problem-causing roast for a special edition of Hinchcliffe’s regular podcast and Netflix show, Kill Tony.
Lots of insults fly on Kill Tony, but they’re usually directed at the aspiring stand-ups who do quick sets for Hinchcliffe and his guests, who are either established comics or a celebrity of some sort. For Kill Tony: WrestleMania, it sounds like past and current WWE stars will be some of Hinchcliffe’s guests — and maybe some of the comedians who get feedback from the host and those he’s assembled.
It also allows Hinchcliffe and Netflix to use their established brand name, and could mean is this year’s WWE/Hinchcliffe collaboration, or an edited version of it, could stream for the public at some point.
