Do the Texas Longhorns have a backup plan at the edge position if top-10 portal prospect Jayden Woods opts to return to the Florida Gators despite a visit to the Forty Acres over the weekend, as reports
indicated on Wednesday afternoon?
Yes, the backup plan is Oklahoma State transfer Wendell Gregory, who is set to visit Texas on Thursday before traveling to Missouri, according to On3Sports.
The 6’3, 255-pounder has also taken visits to Texas Tech and Wisconsin, so the Red Raiders clearly loom as a significant obstacle for the Longhorns even if Gregory’s visit to Austin goes well.
As a member of the 2024 recruiting class out of Marietta (Ga.) Walton, Gregory signed with South Carolina over 19 other offers, including Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Michigan, Nebraska, Tennessee, and USC, among others. A consensus four-star prospect, Gregory was ranked as the No. 179 prospect nationally and the No. 16 edge, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
During Gregory’s one season in Columbia, he played seven snaps over two games, recording one tackle, before transferring to Oklahoma State. For the Cowboys, Gregory had a breakout season with 27 tackles (19 solo), 12 tackles for loss, four sacks, seven quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, and one pass broken up.
247Sports ranks Gregory as the No. 56 overall player in the portal and the No. 11 edge, although On3 considers the Georgia product a top-15 player in the portal.
