After a Week 1 performance that left a lot to be desired from Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood, his status as Michigan’s starter isn’t entirely firm moving forward. Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham has made it known that improvements must be made.
“He’s our QB right now,” Whittingham said on Monday. “It’s not something that’s infinite. At some point, we’ve got to turn a corner, and we’ve got to see improvement, as we’ve got to do with a bunch of stuff. We’ve got to see improvement out of the
coaches. It’s not just on Bryce, and it’s not just Bryce’s job that is not absolutely set in concrete. Nobody’s is.”
Underwood was asked about Whittingham’s comments, specifically him saying that he being QB1 is “not something that’s infinite.” Underwood replied, “there was comments about that?”
“That’s cool,” Underwood went on to say. “I didn’t see that. It’s cool.”
Underwood was 12-of-22 in a 13-12 win against Western Michigan, throwing for 170 yards with one passing and rushing touchdown along with an interception and a fumble. Whittingham spoke glowingly of backup quarterback Tommy Carr this week, calling him poised and unflappable. If Underwood doesn’t perform better against Oklahoma on Saturday, we will truly see how concrete (or lack thereof) his status as starter truly is.
