The San Diego Padres come into their matchup with the Cleveland Guardians on a five-game winning streak. The Padres took two of three games against the Houston Astros and then swept the Milwaukee Brewers in a three-game series.
The Guardians have lost eight of their last 11 games and are returning home to start a six-game homestand with three against the Padres and three against the San Francisco Giants. Despite having a losing record, Cleveland remains in playoff contention and could challenge for
the American League Central title.
Taking the mound: Michael King (SD) vs Gavin Williams (CLE)
Michael King had a solid start his last outing with one run allowed on three hits. He has a sub-4.00 ERA on the season, but has had problems with command at times. If he can locate his pitches, King is one of the best pitchers in baseball. If he is off, the Padres may need to go to the bullpen early, but with the day off on Thursday they should have plenty of options to choose from.
Gavin Willliams has been solid for the Guardians throughout the season. He has an 11-6 record on the year and brings a 3.55 ERA into the matchup today. The right-hander has only allowed two runs in two starts in the month of August and both of those came in his last start against the Chicago White Sox. If he can get into a rhythm the San Diego lineup has shown it can be held down.
