Anthony Gordon has touched down in Barcelona. The English forward has landed at El Prat airport to finalize his transfer from Newcastle United, moving straight to the Hospital de Barcelona for his medical examination. “I’m very happy”, he told reporters at the airport.
According to Mundo Deportivo, FC Barcelona secured the 25-year-old on a five-year contract, beating out late pushes from Bayern Munich and Liverpool FC. The Reds had attempted to leverage Gordon’s local roots and family ties to hijack
the deal at the eleventh hour, but Barça pushed through with an offer reported to be around €70 million plus €10 million in add-ons.
These bonuses trigger only if the Catalan club wins major titles like La Liga or the UEFA Champions League, and if Gordon features in a high percentage of those matches. If Gordon delivers, Barcelona will reportedly be happy to pay as it will mean they have secured major silverware.
The transfer came together quickly after a quiet trip to England by sporting director Deco, technical coordinator Bojan Krkić, and head scout João Amaral. While early speculation suggested the trio was scouting Chelsea FC’s João Pedro, their actual mission was locking down personal terms and wages with Gordon and his agent.
Gordon caught the attention of manager Hansi Flick during a breakout season. The player has spoken highly of his new club in the past, reflecting on a previous encounter by stating, “They are the best I have ever faced.”
Barça wanted the deal wrapped up swiftly, and Gordon shared that urgency. He wanted his club future resolved before joining up with Thomas Tuchel’s England squad on Monday, June 1, to begin FIFA World Cup preparations.
As soon as the medical staff gives the green light, Gordon will sign his contract and head back to England, where he will be competing for a spot in the national team alongside Marcus Rashford.
Interestingly, Gordon could be replacing Rashford in the Barcelona squad. His transfer in is seen as potential confirmation that Barcelona will not trigger a purchase clause for his fellow Englishman.
