Bayern Munich executive board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted to abstaining from the recent vote to approve board member for sport Max Eberl’s contract extension and further elaborated on the reasons why.
According to Rummenigge, his issues appear more down to process than qualms about Eberl himself. His comments were captured by Az journalist Maximilian Koch, via @iMiaSanMia.
“Something about the discussion surrounding Max irritated me,” Hoeneß shared. “The impression was created that the presidential
Committee had already decided on the contract extension and had merely passed that decision on to the other four members of the Supervisory Board. But that’s not how it works.
“The presidential Committee can make a recommendation — but the decision is made by the entire Supervisory Board. That’s exactly what irritated me the most. The presidential Committee consists of five people: Uli Hoeneß, Herbert Hainer and representatives of our three shareholders, Adidas, Audi and Allianz. If something is discussed internally and subsequently presented as nothing more than a recommendation, I have no problem with that.
“But if such a recommendation is leaked to the newspapers and creates the impression that the decision has effectively already been made, then I do have a problem with that. I make no secret of that.”
Asked if he was ‘personally disappointed’ with Hoeneß and club president Herbert Hainer, Rummenigge did not provide a straight answer.
“I don’t know who made that decision,” the former Bayern CEO replied. “I only know one thing: The way it was made public was not right. I told those involved that as well — I’m a person who believes in being open and straightforward.”
Bayern is moving forward with Eberl and attempting to put a show of unity and stability behind it. But reports of internal dissent have persisted, and Rummenigge’s airing of his annoyances will likely not put a stop to the matter.
