For the Cleveland Browns, the story of TE Dae’Quan Wright will come to an end soon. For fans of sports, things continue to change and change in ways that most will either find tiresome, annoying, angering, or some combination of negative emotion words.
Wright’s time with the Browns has been interesting, as most of it has been spent away from the team. Cleveland claimed the tight end on August 11th, to the excitement of at least one of our readers. Wright stayed mostly away from the team as he seemingly
awaited a legal ruling about whether he could return to college or not.
On Wednesday, that ruling went in Wright’s (and other players’) favor, but by Friday another ruling seemed to halt any movement. On Saturday, Wright was actually in uniform warming up on the field in Cleveland, seemingly solidifying that he would return to his fight to make the Browns 53-man roster or practice squad.
On Sunday, despite no known ruling that changed Friday’s court decision, things had changed again with Wright being waived by the team, with the expectation that he would return to college, following former Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin to LSU:
Then again, another NFL team could claim the former Ole Miss standout, or the legal battle could go against Wright and he could be forced back to the professional league.
“History” indeed, as Schefter noted. One that seemingly benefits the players and a select set of college programs, but continues to erode some of the things we have known about amateur and professional sports for about the last century or so.
Right, wrong, or indifferent, the Browns are a footnote in Wright’s history-making move. What happens when Wright finally finishes his college career? Does he go back into the NFL draft? Is he a free agent? By waiving him, Cleveland no longer has his contractual rights, but do they get first dibs from Wright’s agent for releasing him to pursue this option?
Sports have changed. We don’t get a say in the rules; we just try to understand them the best we can.
