Through the spring and summer, we will be counting down the Jets roster player by player. We begin the series by discussing T’Vondre Sweat.

Year With Jets: 1st
Projected Role: Starting nose tackle
His 2025: Sweat was a regular in the middle of the Titans defense, playing over half the snaps. His numbers weren’t eye popping, but the job of a player in a nose tackle rose isn’t to produce gaudy stats. It is to eat up blockers and hold the point of attack on most plays. Guys
like Sweat do the dirty work in the trenches to make the rest of the defense look good. By most accounts, Sweat did that effectively.
In the offseason he was traded to the Jets for Jermaine Johnson. Robert Saleh’s defensive scheme doesn’t really fit players like Sweat so the Jets were able to scoop up an inexpensive useful player while shedded an expensive player with massive question marks.
His 2026 will be a success if: Sweat eats up blocks effectively and makes life consistently easier on his fellow linemen, Demario Davis, and Jamien Sherwood. You’ll probably never see Sweat post monster stats. His impact is more hidden and subtle.
In the NFL of 25 years ago, defenses were built around guys like this. You stuck a massive 360 pound tackle over the other team’s center. He would draw a double team from a guard which would completely throw off the offense’s blocking assignments and lead to the demise of the play called.
Modern NFL offenses are based around the quick passing game. That has forced defenses to adapt. The ability to generate pressure quickly has taken on a higher priority, which has relegated players like Sweat to less significant roles.
Even, a guy like this remains an asset, a big asset even, for an NFL defense on early downs and can be central to a successful run defense.
