When Liverpool signed left back Milos Kerkez last summer, it signalled that the club was preparing for a future without Andy Robertson. For a time, there was even an expectation it would lead to Robertson’s departure before the 2025-26 season kicked off.
In the end, the now 31-year-old Robertson chose to stay at the club, and manager Arne Slot’s decision to give an underperforming Kerkez the starting job straight away rather than making him win it from Robertson has been a point of contention for many.
Through it, though, Robertson has kept his head down, kept quiet, and performed well when chosen. Yet with his contract set to expire, few expect him to stay beyond the season. However, Robertson this week has suggested that might be a possibility.
“We’ll see what happens,” was Robertson’s response when asked this week about his Liverpool future. “We’ve had chats now which will remain private, but I’ve spoken to them and we’ll see what happens. Would I like to stay? Yes, but it’s still a difficult question.
“I’ve got five months so we need to see if there’s the option to stay or to go, then I’ll sit down with my family and decide. For now I’m just trying to enjoy being a Liverpool player, and then I’ll need to see what myself and my family want moving forward.”
Whatever the future holds for Robertson, his status as a club legend and one of Liverpool’s greatest fullbacks of all time is secure, and most fans would likely agree the transition to Kerkez has been mismanaged this season and negatively impacted results.
