2026 has been the year of Jalen Brunson. Shooting Stars champions, Conference Finals MVP, championship, Finals MVP, multiple ESPYs, and numerous media appearances, including Saturday Night Live and an upcoming appearance on his favorite show, Law and Order. But he’s not done yet. On Friday morning, Stefan Bondy of the New York Post reported that the point guard had been named the Professional Athlete of the Year by the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association.
The press release released by the association, which consists of 17 members, highlights his incredible performance, ability to deliver in the clutch, and his leadership.
“His skill, his leadership, and his connection to the Philadelphia basketball community all make him a deserving recipient of this honor. He plays his best when the stakes are the highest and has led his teams to championships at every level.” Mike Shute, president of the PSWA, said. “We are pleased to present him with this honor, as he joins a list of past winners such as Carl Lewis, Muhammad Ali, Wilt Chamberlain and Mike Schmidt.”
Brunson, who famously played at Villanova, will be honored at the 122nd Annual PSWA Awards Banquet next year on January 11th at the University of Pennsylvania. Funnily enough, the announcement also comes just hours before the Knicks take on the 76ers to kick off the 2026 NBA Cup.
