Darren Till heard Yoel Romero mention his name and he wasn’t amused by the challenge.
The former UFC title challengers appear to be at the genesis of a potential feud following Romero’s recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show. Romero expressed admiration for Till’s recent knockout win over Luke Rockhold and suggested they should box next, a statement that drew the ire of Till on social media.
“Yoel shut ya f*cking fat old mouth think I give a shit about you nowadays?” Till wrote. “Do I fuck. Come over to boxing and I’ll leave your fat juiced head on the canvas. In fact I’ve been told to stop calling old c*nts out like yourself out so f*ck it. I don’t even wanna fight you. You’re an old-age pensioner. You’re a bus pass dependant. Don’t even call my name ya bum.”
Till also took shots at longtime rival Mike Perry and Romero’s manager Malki Kawa.
On Thursday, Romero responded with his trademark quote:
Romero, 48, has been making his own waves in the boxing world, debuting for BKFC this past Friday. At BKFC 80 in Hollywood, Fla., Romero impressed with a second-round knockout of Theo Doukas. He also has two knockout wins competing for Perry’s Dirty Boxing promotion.
Now, it appears Romero is targeting a more traditional boxing bout with the 32-year-old Till, who has also won exhibition boxing bouts against MMA fighters Rockhold, Darren Stewart, and Anthony Taylor.
One thing Till and Romero have in common is that they both rose to No. 1 contender status in the UFC, though fell short of becoming champion. Till fought Tyron Woodley for the welterweight title at UFC 228, while Romero was set to challenge Robert Whittaker for the middleweight title at UFC 225, but missed weight and was ineligible to win the belt (Whittaker went on to win a hotly contested split decision over Romero).
