Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NBA. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cavaliers fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.
Last week, we asked you another round of questions. Let’s see how Cleveland Cavaliers fans reacted.
First, we wanted to know whether or not you were happy with Evan Mobley’s expanded offensive role. The Cavs are trying to force-feed as much offensive responsibility as possible.
That’s led to a career-high in usage for Mobley, but a lackluster start in terms of efficiency. Is the trade-off worth it?
Cavs fans voted no. More than 50% of voters said they were unhappy with Mobley’s new role, while 44% said they were okay with it.
This is to be expected. Everyone can say they want to see Mobley get more reps, even despite the growing pains. But actually sitting through it is another issue. Fans are understandably frustrated with the bumps and bruises we’ve seen along the way.
But make no mistake. These reps are valuable for Mobley. And, just 10 games in, we’ve already seen Mobley learn some lessons. He’s balanced his approach, starting to attack the basket more instead of settling for jumpers. He’s also taking strides as a facilitator, dishing a career-high 4.2 assists per game.
You might not be happy with the results so far. But this is a long-term goal that will pay off for the Cavs if Mobley continues to show gradual improvement.
As for the Cavaliers’ offense, in general, fans are significantly more confident in this than in the defense. An overwhelming 87% of fans voted in favor of the offense.
This is interesting, considering Cleveland has the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and currently ranks higher in defensive rating than offense according to Cleaning the Glass. But the eye test is hard to beat. Fans can see the Cavaliers struggling to defend the three-point line. And at times, struggling to play with effort.
Cleveland has shown it can turn up the heat defensively when needed. But I understand why fans have been less than impressed with the defense to start the season.
On the other hand, the Cavs’ offense put up a combined 280 points in Darius Garland’s first two games back from injury. That was the second most in franchise history across a two-game stretch. So, it’s only natural that fans are feeling amped up about this team’s scoring potential.
