Newcastle United has been linked with AC Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek for more than a year, with intermediaries previously making the club aware of the England international’s potential availability ahead of future transfer windows.
TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey has now reported a major development, claiming Newcastle has actually enquired about the 30-year-old player as Milan has become increasingly open to a January departure given his expiring contract.
“Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle have enquired
about the pair,” Bailey reported, referring to Loftus-Cheek and Fikayo Tomori.
Bailey added that Newcastle can draw on “an established working relationship with Milan” following previous deals involving Sandro Tonali and Malick Thiaw.
Milan is reportedly prepared to negotiate for both players, with neither considered central to Ruben Amorim’s long-term plans and Loftus-Cheek’s contract set to expire next summer. If he’s not in Milan’s plans, then it’s fair to assume the Serie A side will try to move him in January instead of risking losing him for nothing come July.
Bailey reported that both players are “understood to be keen on returning to the Premier League,” while Brentford and Nottingham Forest have also checked on Loftus-Cheek’s availability ahead of the January transfer window.
The important change noted in this report is that Newcastle’s interest has now seemingly moved beyond simply being offered the player and observing developments from a distance.
An enquiry has reportedly been made, and although there is still no indication that formal negotiations or an offer have followed, it shouldn’t surprise anyone if the Magpies end up getting a deal done ahead of January.
Would Loftus-Cheek be a good January addition if Milan is willing to sell him on the low, or should Newcastle prioritize younger players instead? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
