Roster moves
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ active roster is now at 28 and 40-man roster is at 40.
- Reinstated from the 15-day injured list: RHP Ryan Thompson (strained scapular)
- Recalled from Triple-A Reno: OF Jorge Barrosa
Ah, September is upon us, and that can mean only one thing. September call-ups! It’s not quite the same as it used to be, when everyone on the 40-man roster was eligible for a potential spell in the majors. That led to dugouts which needed a second deck to hold all the players. Especially before the three-batter rule came in, it also lead (as we have talked about before) to games
where it felt like more time was spent watching people come in from the bullpen, than actual baseball. In September 2015, the D-backs had a whopping 124 relief appearances, compared to just 87 last season, in only one fewer game.
While part of me enjoyed the anarchy and chaos that resulted, I have to admit, it made sense to even the playing field and fix a limit, allowing for two additional players to join the roster. In this case, its Thompson and Barrosa. I’m particularly keen to see how the former gets on. He adds experience to what has been close to an all-rookie pen in some games. Jalen Beeks is, offhand, the only pitcher down there with more MLB games. Thompson is also under team control for another year, so could well be part of… whatever Mike Hazen constructs for the 2026 bullpen. Ryan last pitched on July 4 so will be keen to prove both his health and his worth in the last month.
Barrosa feels like he has been around the minor-league system forever, despite being only 24 years old. This happens when you sign at 17, and he has already racked up 288 games for the Reno Aces. He has a total of 56 PA in the majors, though is batting only .132 and has yet to hit his first home-run here. Officially listed at 5’6″, he is tied with Jose Altuve and the Angels’ Gustavo Campero as the shortest players in the majors this year. Though there is… some question as to whether Altuve might be tacking on a couple of inches. There have been lighter players than Barrosa’s 165 lbs, including Juan Morillo’s supposed 150 lbs.
