Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox returned to Truist Park for the first time in more than a year – and only the second time since 2019 – as the Atlanta Braves celebrated the 1995 World Series Championship team prior to tonight’s game against the New York Mets.
The majority of the team’s players and coaching staff were on-hand for the event. Hall of Fame pitchers John Smoltz, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine threw out the first pitch to current Braves Hurston Waldrep, Sean Murphy and Spencer Schwellenbach.
Among the members of the team who were on-hand today were David Justice, Javy Lopez, Chipper Jones, Fred McGriff, Mark Lemkle, Marquis Grissom, Ryan Klesko, Mark Wohlers, Greg McMicheal, Kent Mercker, Mike Devereaux and Alejandro Peña.
The highlight of the ceremony was the appearance of Cox, who was in the stadium, but not on the field. He suffered a stroke in 2019 and has made a limited number of public appearances since. Now 84, Cox spent 25 years as Atlanta’s manager over two stints.
A former big league third baseman with the New York Yankees, he also managed the Toronto Blue Jays and was Braves General Manager prior to returning to the dugout as during the 1990 season. He retired after the 2010 season and was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.
