Bayern Munich finished the League Phase of the UEFA Champions League on a high note with a 2-1 win at PSV Eindhoven, cementing their finish in second place in the table. Goals from Jamal Musiala and Harry
Kane sealed the away win for the German Rekordmeister , carrying positive momentum into their weekend clash at Hamburg SV in the Bundesliga after their shock 2-1 loss at home to FC Augsburg last weekend.
After the win, board member for sport Max Eberl was asked about the current contract situation for Leon Goretzka, who has been heavily linked with a summer departure from Bayern. His current contract is set to expire this summer and, not for the first time within the past couple of seasons, he’s been a candidate to leave the club, especially now that Vincent Kompany has shown a strong preference to the pairing of Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović at the heart of midfield.
When Eberl was directly asked about Goretzka and his contract situation, he did not deny the fact that the player 100% has to think about his future. “That’s legitimate (rumors of him leaving this summer). His contract expires in the summer. No decisions have been made yet. He has to think about his future too, because he doesn’t know what the future holds. So, as far as I’m concerned, everything is fine,” Eberl explained (via @iMiaSanMia).
There have been previous seasons where leaving was an option for Goretzka and the club was okay with it, but he wound up deciding to stay and fight for his place in the team, granted that’s been under different managers between Vincent Kompany, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann. Currently, there have been reports that Atlético de Madrid are heavily interested in Goretzka to replace Conor Gallagher after the latter joined Tottenham Hotspur on a permanent deal. Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg had even reported that Atletico would like to get Goretzka as soon as possible before the winter transfer window closes and that Goretzka had a big decision to make.
The midfielder was an unused sub in the win at PSV Eindhoven; not to say that’s a clear indicator he’s out the door, but it’s become increasingly clear he is, by no means, a first choice midfielder for Kompany when everyone else is fully fit and available.
