After winning three of the first four games, the Knights settled for a series split after a tough weekend in Gwinnett against the Stripers (70-67).
Pitcher Jonathan Cannon, 26, was nearly unsolvable on Thursday, and that excellent start helped the Knights secure a 1-0 victory. Cannon pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings, and he picked up four strikeouts without issuing any walks. In addition, Cannon only allowed three hits, and all of those were singles. Only two players reached second base against Cannon, and opponents went 0-for-3 with a strikeout with runners in scoring position. In 111 1/3 innings with the Knights, Cannon has a 4.93 ERA and a 5.30 FIP, so it has not been smooth sailing. However, if Cannon can build on that start and finish strong, his outlook heading into the offseason will be much more positive.

The Barons dropped a road series against Biloxi (63-65), four games to two. This was a crucial series for Birmingham’s playoff chances. Incredibly, the Barons still are in the race, based on the second half standings, but this week’s results did not help. After this week, the Barons (31-32) trail Rocket City (32-31) by just one game for a second-half playoff berth.
Second baseman José Colmenares, 24, had a fantastic series against the Shuckers. Colmenares picked up his first weekly award of the season by finishing 4-for-11 with two homers, a double, and five RBIs. As a result, Colmenares had a sky-high 1.413 OPS to lead the Barons. The White Sox acquired Colmenares from Philadelphia as part of the Derek Hill trade. Colmenares started with Winston-Salem, where he slashed .278/.403/.413 in 36 games before being promoted to Birmingham, where he is slashing .232/.325/.420 in 22 games.

This is Winston-Salem’s third 4-2 series in the past four weeks, with the one exception being a 3-3 series last week. As a result of this strong performance against Rome (61-68), the Dash clinched a playoff spot, and they will open a best-of-three series against Bowling Green (82-48) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Central.
Outfielder Nick McLain, 23, is on an amazing hot streak, as this is his third consecutive weekly award. This week, McLain went 7-for-18 with a homer, three doubles, and three walks to post a team-leading 1.177 OPS. McLain got promoted to Winston-Salem on July 31, and he is dominating at the new, higher level. Since that promotion, McLain is slashing .330/.462/.571 in 26 games, playing a large role in Winston-Salem’s strong finish. It will be interesting to see if he can keep the good times rolling in the postseason.

The Cannon Ballers took care of business against Delmarva (45-87), winning five of six to finish their season on a high note.
First baseman Grayson Fitzwater, 22, was crushing it from start to finish against the Shorebirds. In the last week of the season, Fitzwater put together a big sprint to the finish, going 9-for-16 with a homer, a triple, four doubles, six walks and 10 RBIs. The White Sox drafted Fitzwater in the 13th round this year, and his first professional season was successful. Fitzwater wraps up 2026 with a .271/.365/.486 slash line in 29 games, all with the Cannon Ballers.
