Dillian Whyte quickly caught up with some boxing media to discuss his career plans as he still intends to carry on despite coming of a first round stoppage loss to Moses Itauma in his most recent outing. Here Whyte says he hopes to be back in the ring this spring, breaks down the fight between Tyson Fury and Arslanbek Makhmudov, and also talks about his keen interest on getting a shot at Deontay Wilder. “Yeah, I’m
trying to fight May time — end of May.”
On the Fury vs Makhmudov matchup
“First when I saw the fight I was kind of ‘ah, easy fight for Fury.’ But then reanalyzing and watching [Makhmudov’s last fight] again, it’s not an easy fight for Fury. I think the first three or four rounds is dangerous for Fury because Makhmudov can punch, he’s aggressive, and Tyson Fury’s been out a while. So it all depends on what he’s been doing, has he been training, what’s his mental state.
“I know his mental state seems good but I’ve been out for a while, I’ve been inactive in my career so I know what it’s like. I think Fury’s a guy you have to get him off his rhythm and keep him offset. And I think if Makhmudov rushes him, Fury will try to trade with him because Fury’s got pride and that’s where he’s got knocked down in fights…
“Sometimes he tries to trade and hold his feet and he can get knocked down and I think Makhmudov is a way harder puncher than those guys…Just rush him, you’re as big as him, you’re stronger than him, so just keep rushing him. But I think once Fury gets into his rhythm after about three or four rounds, then I think he’ll cruiser his way to a late stoppage or points.”
On his interest in facing Deontay Wilder
“I would love to fight Deontay Wilder. I’ve been trying to fight that fool for so many years. I think he’s got a lot left in the tank but I think he’s also — some fights are all about timing and I think me and him will make a very good fight because if he’s going 12 now with Derek at this age and this kind of Derek that is way, way long in the tooth, I can definitely knock Deontay Wilder out. I always believed I could knock Deontay Wilder out. It’s one guy I’ve always believed I can knock him out. I’ve always believed it and I still believe it, and I’d love a chance to get to do it.”
