Newcastle United’s squad rebuild could yet include more experienced departures as Eddie Howe continues reshaping his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
While much of the focus has centered on high-profile exits such as Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, Chronicle Live’s Sean McCormick reported that Jacob Murphy is another senior player whose future remains uncertain.
Murphy is preparing for what would be his 10th season at St. James’ Park after joining the club in 2017, but his contract situation
has opened the door to speculation.
The 31-year-old has just one year remaining on his current deal, and Chronicle Live reports Newcastle could be willing to listen to attractive offers before the transfer window closes.
“Murphy is now entering his tenth season as a Newcastle player and he still remains a valuable member of Eddie Howe’s squad,” Chronicle Live wrote. “However, the 31-year-old has 12 months remaining on his contract and a decent transfer offer could tempt the Magpies into a sale.”
Everton has already emerged as a potential destination. Sky Sports’ Keith Downie recently reported the Toffees are interested in Murphy, although no formal bid has yet been submitted.
Murphy has developed into an important squad player under Howe, offering versatility across the front line and contributing to Newcastle’s Carabao Cup-winning side in 2025. So far, he’s appeared in 264 games for the Magpies while scoring 25 goals and assisting on 39 more.
However, Newcastle has already strengthened the wing positions this summer by signing Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim, and further attacking additions remain possible before the September deadline.
With only a year left on his contract and already aged 31, Murphy represents one of several experienced players Newcastle could cash in on, if only a bit given his €12 million valuation, as the club continues lowering the average age of the squad while generating funds for further signings.
