The Minnesota Vikings are being overlooked heading into 2026 — and if history is any guide, that might be exactly what this franchise needs. On the latest episode of The Real Forno Show, host Tyler Forness of Vikings 1st & SKOL welcomed football analyst and YouTube personality Garret Greenlee of Football Analysis — a channel boasting over 246,000 subscribers — for a wide-ranging breakdown of the state of the Vikings franchise and delivered some of the sharpest takes of the off-season.
Greenlee opened
by pushing back on the national narrative that Minnesota has no path to the postseason in 2026. “Our quarterbacks cumulatively had 17 touchdowns to 21 picks last year,” he noted, “and whatever you think of Kyler Murray heading into the season, I don’t think he’s gonna throw 17 touchdowns to 21 picks.” Forness echoed the point, reminding fans that the 1998, 2000, and 2017 squads were each overlooked before making deep runs. The duo agreed that a healthy offensive line — one that didn’t have a full starting five play a game together until mid-season in 2025 — changes the entire calculus for 2026.
The conversation touched on a broad range of roster topics critical to fans heading into training camp:
- Kyler Murray vs. J.J. McCarthy: Both analysts expect Murray to start Week 1, but Forness dropped the episode’s biggest hot take: “J.J. McCarthy will not be on this roster for week one,” whether via trade or injury. He cited Kevin O’Connell’s well-known resistance to having his starter looking over his shoulder as a key driver of the decision.
- Garret’s confidence in Murray: A “seven, seven and a half out of 10” — acknowledging the Cardinals’ historically dysfunctional environment as a major factor in Murray’s uneven career. “This franchise hasn’t made the playoffs in nine of the past 10 years,” Greenlee said of Arizona.
- Receiving Room Struggles: Greenlee was candid that Justin Jefferson “had the worst year of his career” individually, not just statistically, while also noting that McCarthy’s 10.8% drop rate — compared to Wentz’s 3.5% — placed enormous pressure on every pass-catcher.
- Tight End Room: Greenlee called it “one of the worst in the NFL,” with T.J. Hockenson declining post-ACL/MCL injury and Josh Oliver limited to a specific, narrow role. Both analysts expect 2026 to be Hockenson’s last season in purple. A young, receiving tight end in a future draft is the preferred fix.
- Nolan Teasley’s Vision: The new GM is building through the trenches. “Building trench play is a prerequisite for success in January,” Greenlee stated, pointing to Donovan Jackson, Caleb Banks, and Dallas Turner as evidence of a philosophical shift. Notably, Jackson reportedly played last season from Week 3 on with a broken bone in his wrist.
- Garret’s Hot Take: Expect significantly increased usage from running back Demond Claiborne by season’s end — a player Greenlee compared to De’Von Achane in playing style.
- Season Ceiling: Greenlee projects a playoff berth with a Divisional Round exit as the team’s realistic ceiling — though he’d “shave his head” for a Super Bowl run.
The NFC North, Greenlee argued, is “the most complete division in football,” making every game in the division a must-watch for Vikings fans in 2026.

What do you think?
Will J.J. McCarthy still be on the Vikings’ roster when the season kicks off, or is Forness right that his time in Minnesota is already over?
