Midweek baseball just really sucks sometimes, and Tuesday night was no exception as the sub .500 Memphis Tigers stunned No. 18 Ole Miss, 6-2.
The season series split with the Rebels (19-7, 3-3 SEC) winning 7-1 in Oxford earlier this month. On Tuesday, however, the hitting was absolutely non-existent with only two runs on four hits. FOUR DAMN HITS. The “fire Bianco” posts are trending already folks.
Down 4-2 in the seventh, Ole Miss managed to get bases loaded only to come up with nothing, and Memphis
jumped on that momentum to tack on two more in the bottom of the eighth to put this game away.
This game should serve as a heaping helping of humility after the Rebels cracked back into the top 25. With top 10 Mississippi State coming into Oxford this weekend, an upset on the road could have been the result of overlooking the moribund Tigers (7-16, 1-2 AAC). The reality is this team isn’t that elite level right now to overlook anyone however.
There’s going to be bad nights in the course of 56 games, but with six non-conference games remaining, the Rebels can’t afford many more in the midweek like last night. The grind of the SEC schedule is fully settling in, and these games should feel like more of a reprieve to play loose than a white-knuckled rollercoaster ride.
Next up for the Rebels is MSU with play beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
