Even though they went 2-0 last week and won the Big Ten regular-season outright championship, the Michigan men’s basketball team remained at No. 3 in this week’s AP Poll.
However, there was some chaos around college basketball that shook up the top of the rankings. Iowa State dropped from No. 4 to No. 6 after losing to Texas Tech last week. The Cyclones have another huge game tonight on the road against No. 2 Arizona.
Elsewhere, Houston continued its losing ways last week by dropping a contest to Kansas.
The Cougars fell from No. 5 in the AP Poll down to No. 7 as a result. Other teams in the top-10 to drop some spots include Purdue (No. 8 to No. 15), Gonzaga (No. 9 to No. 12) and Illinois (No. 10 to No. 11).
Michigan stayed as the No. 1 team in the country on Evan Miya’s and Bart Torvik’s ratings, but did move down to No. 2 in the NET rankings and on KenPom.
Michigan will close out the regular season this week by heading to Iowa on Thursday (8 p.m., Peacock) and then returning to Ann Arbor for a Senior Day rematch against Michigan State on Sunday (4:30 p.m., CBS).
Update on the women’s team
Meanwhile, the Michigan women’s basketball team had an epic final week of the regular season. Following a come-from-behind win in overtime against No. 13 Ohio State last Wednesday, Kim Barnes Arico and the Wolverines hosted and took down No. 14 Maryland, 87-69, on Senior Day at Crisler Center.
Thanks to that 2-0 week, the women’s team finished the regular season 24-5 overall and 15-3 in Big Ten play, with both those win figures being the most in program history. Following the historic end to the year, Michigan stayed at No. 8 in this week’s AP Poll.
The Wolverines will now attempt to win the Big Ten Tournament Championship this week in Indianapolis. They earned the No. 3 seed and will play either Maryland, Oregon or Purdue in the last game of the day on Friday. All their games — with exception of the tournament championship, should they make it that far, which will be broadcasted on CBS — can be viewed on Big Ten Network.
