My first memories of college football fandom were watching Joe Hamilton and George Godsey on the flats. I still remember Munson yelling “the goose is loose!” as he ran in for an unexpected touchdown at Sanford Stadium in Athens. I remember Godsey holding
up the three fingers to signify beating UGA three years in a row.
So how did we get to the point where nearly 30 years later, we have beat our rival 3 times and just lost to Deion Sanders and Colorado? Let me wipe 42 year old coke off my shirt and take you back to 2002.
The apparent failure of Chan Gailey and Hiring of Paul Johnson
After George O’Leary took the Notre Dame job (the events surrounding this could be its own 5000 word essay) Georgia Tech hired Chan Gailey, but you won’t hear many Georgia Tech fans with a good word to say about him. He was previously head coach for the Dallas Cowboys and at the time Tech hired him the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.
Why is he remembered so poorly by Ramblin Wreck fans? For one main reason, he could never beat Georgia. He did have some success on the flats. Gailey would recruit the best player in Georgia Tech history, one Calvin Johnson. He would also pair him with a very hot and cold quarterback in Reggie Ball that started all 4 years from the time he was a freshman. I think any neutral observer would characterize Gailey’s tenue at Tech as mediocre. He went 44-32 (57%) in his time with the Jackets. His best season was 2006 when he went 9-5 with a loss in the ACC title game to Wake Forest 9 to 6. Gailey was fired after the 2007 season after the 7th straight loss to UGA.
Now comes Paul Johnson, adored by Jacket Fans to this day. Paul came in and immediately had success Georgia Tech had not seen in some time. “The Kick and the Pick”, “The Miracle on Techwood Drive”, “The Miracle on North Avenue”, will all be remembered for years to come, However; this is the first hole in the swiss cheese. Paul ran an archaic style of offense, The Triple Option. This was a massive impediment to recruiting for a school that already had an academic one. Georgia Tech never came close to a top 25 class in Johnson’s entire time at Georgia Tech. This was during a time that top quarterback prospects like Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence wouldn’t even take a call from Tech due to their style of offense. Premier running backs weren’t interested in running the triple either, but Paul could do one thing: beat teams no one though he could beat.
He won the ACC, beat UGA 3 times in Athens, and always had a very well prepared team. So what what’s Johnson’s overall record with the Jackets? Paul was 82-61 (57%). There’s that number again, less than a 60% winning percentage. Johnson struggled toward the later part of his tenure at Tech with less talent and teams adjusting to his unorthodox offense. Not to forget the amazing talent we remember from those later 2000’s teams (Josh Nesbitt, Jonathan Dwyer, Michael Johnson, Derrick Morgan, Morgan Burnett) came from the best class Georgia Tech ever recruited by Gailey in 2007.
I still see Georgia Tech fans who parrot “The only way we can win is to go back to the triple option. We just can’t compete otherwise”. I still wonder sometimes what would have happened had Gailey been given another year with that stud of a 07 class. I’ve always felt that running the triple option instilled an obsolete mindset in Georgia Tech Athletics that we have to somehow be unorthodox or run gimmicks to be successful. Like administration saw the success Paul was able to have without a lot of serious buy in and Tech said see we don’t need to do what other teams are doing. Johnson himself was critical of the buy in Georgia Tech had to football. “Look at what Clemson has”, he said in a press conference. “Where would you want to go”, Johnson questioned.
The disastrous years of Geoffrey Collins
I can probably credit any success I have online to an abject hatred of this man. At the end of Paul’s tenure on the flats many Tech fans were ready to move on. They were exited to move into the 21st century of college football. Athletic Director Todd Stansbury settled on a young coach coming off a 7-6 year at Temple, Geoff Collins. There were some reasons to be hopeful with young Geoffrey. He had successful stints as defensive coordinator at Florida and Mississippi state. He came into Atlanta saying all the right things. We have to use the Atlanta branding. Sell the 404. We are going to be veracious in recruiting. As much as I dislike the man, he was right about all of that. Geoff’s ego immediately put him at odds with the old guard at Georgia Tech. Paul Johnson talked about being locked out of the facility not longer after Geoff took over. Collins’ culture was 180 degrees from the tough and hard nosed one Johnson had established over the previous decade. We all gave Collins the benefit of the doubt after the first year and the transition from a triple option roster. It didn’t take long to realize there was major trouble in paradise.
Collins was 3-9, 3-7, and 3-9 in his 3 full years at Georgia Tech. We got worse never better. We averaged a blocked punt every other game toward the end. The league average is a blocked punt every other year. Collins was fired early in his 4th year and the takeaway for many Tech fans was this. New ideas and approaches to the evolving landscape of college football don’t work at Georgia Tech. In fact, it resulted in the worst stretch in program history.
The Tech Man Brent Key
I don’t think its any secrete that Brent Key and Geoff Collins never really saw eye to eye. I don’t expect they talk or send each other Christmas cards in December.
When Brent Key took over as interim he inherited one of the worst teams in college football and probably the worst performing team in Georgia Tech history. From the moment Key took over the Jackets were night different from who they had been under Collins. We couldn’t cover punts well but we weren’t getting them blocked. Key went on the road as a 3 touchdown underdog and won against Pitt with Jeff Simms. Key went to Chapel Hill again as a three Touchdown underdog and won with 3rd and 4th string quarterbacks Taisun Phommachanh and Zach Gibson. The team was disciplined and tough as nails. Key just missed a bowl due, in part to backup quarterback Zach Pyron breaking his collar bone in the Miami game. I will die on this hill to this day. I don’t think any other coach could have pulled off what Brent Key did as interim at Georgia Tech. I was beating the drum that Key was the man and had done more than enough to earn the job.
There was one problem. He was not the first choice of new athletic director J Batt. It’s never good for the long term success of a football program when donors start making decisions in the hiring of coaches. The world of college football is full of such cases. The back door dealings to hire Bill Belichick behind AD Bubba Cunningham’s back is a perfect example. All indications point to J Batt intending to hire Willie Fritz as the next head coach of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Fritz has an excellent track record of program building. I don’t know that we’ll ever know what truly happened but the narrative is that donors wanted Key and donors got Key. Heck, I even made a video in protest of this hire. I didn’t like hiring a coach who was 62 at the time. I felt that college football had become more of a demanding young mans game, but that’s why I make youtube videos instead of hiring coaches.
Fritz just improved Houston from 4-8 to a ranked 10-3 team from 2024 to 2025. I’m not saying that Fritz would have been better than Key, but would we have felt the same way about Fritz if Key wasn’t a “Tech Man”. Brent Key has improved Georgia Tech each year at the helm winning 6 regular season games in 2024, 7 in 2025, and 9 in 2026. It’s easy to see why some would think you’re crazy for having any criticism of a coach improving yearly, especially given where we’ve come from. I can hear someone yelling now, “Don’t you remember Collins!”. To understand will require some nuance.
Yes, Key has improved every year as the head man at Tech. Yes, he’s become more competitive with our rival and beat a top 5 team in Miami that had the number one overall pick at Quarterback; However, he’s now lost 6 of his last 7 games in ugly fashion. The biggest elephant in the room at the moment is Brent Key’s inability to manage his staff. He has been through 5 defensive coordinators in 4 years. Following the best season the Jackets have had since 2014, Key had a mass exodus of staff retaining only Jess Simpson and Chris Wienke. Turning over this much staff after a historic season is insanely abnormal. Is this a case of they were never “Tech Men” and lack loyalty or is there something more?
The Golden Blind Spot
Buster Faulkner took heir apparent quarterback Aaron Philo, legacy player Luke Harpring, wide receiver Bailey Stockton, Center Harrison Moore, and wide receiver coach Trent McKnight to Florida. Georgia Tech fandom has had a strangely love hate relationship with the man. Buster had the 34th and 11th ranked total offenses in the country in 2024 and 2025.
He built an offensive system behind the strengths of Quarterback Haynes King. Even so, many Tech fans remain critical of his third down play calling and overuse of screen passes. And don’t forget, he was the Offensive Coordinator for 3 of the 5 losses in those 6 games right?
Here we come to the crux of the issue. At some time around the Pitt game, a game that was win or go home for an ACC title appearance, Brent Key and Buster Faulkner had a major falling out over the offensive scheme. It had been building up for some time and boiled over that week. Key allegedly wanted to change the gameplan Buster had late in the week leading up to the Pitt game. I have talked to multiple sources that not only describe Key as very hard to work for, but at times getting personal with his staff during disagreements. I have witnessed with my own eyes Brent Key nearly getting physical with staff not once but twice on the sidelines. We will probably never know exactly what happened to cause the staff attrition but Key’s choice of staff in light of these circumstances raises major red flags.
Following a major downfall after an 8 and 0 start in 2025 and allegations of Key not playing well with others, who does he hire? He hires his former quarterback and best man at his wedding George Godsey. Godsey had not coached in college since 2010. He had two failed stints as an offensive coordinator in the NFL and was the Tight Ends coach for the Ravens. He had one thing going for him though. He was a Tech Man. Not only a Tech Man, but a Georgia Tech great.
Key also hired former Tech linebacker and special teams coach Jason Semore, the first man he pulled aside when named interim to pull the team out of the nose dive they were in. I hope that at some point in the future I am proven wrong, but I fear that Semore and Godsey were hired to be yes men for Key. With Key’s alleged brutal treatment of staff he needed to place men on staff that would never question him schematically or in preparation.
This brings us to Colorado. Key went out and paid top dollar to grab one of the nations top running backs. This told us what Key wanted to identity of the offense to be moving forward as the Tech running back room was already the strongest on the offense. What we saw Thursday was a team that seemed unprepared and confused behind an NFL 250 play playbook. We saw an offensive line that looked worse that what Key inherited in his interim year. We saw play calling that seemed unwaveringly stubborn to running between the tackles when it proved to be ineffective. We saw clock management that rivaled the Mario Cristobal knee fiasco.
Is this what Georgia Tech football looks like when Key doesn’t have a staff member that will challenge him on play calling and game planning? I did not think Georgia Tech would be a great team this year, but I was actually ignorant enough to bet drinking a 42 year old coke that we were not losing to Colorado bad. I did not think we were 288 yards of offense and 51 rushing yards bad. Following that loss I drove home, went live and drank a 1984 Georgia Tech coke. I logged off and thought, “How in the world did we get here after that 8 and 0 start?”.
How in the world did we get here?
There’s not a team I love more than the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. It’s the reason I spend virtually all of my spare time making content for it, but there’s some things that need to change. I know what you’re thinking “Wreck, its just one game. Why are you over reacting? Why are you so negative?”
The answer is because I believe Georgia Tech can be more and deserves to give its fans more. Brent Key is 27-21 as Head Coach for the Jackets: that’s 56.25 percent.
There’s that number yet again, 57%.
We like Brent Key and George Godsey because we remember them from the 90s and how great Georgia Tech was during that time. I started by talking about that being my first memory as a fan, but I think its time to move on from 1999.
Let’s start a new historic run. I think its’ time to consider maybe we don’t need a “Tech Man”, we need the right man. Maybe its time to set aside , and I hate to use this phrase, the us against the world mentality. I still see in every forum and Facebook group, the bogey man that is the Georgia Board of Regents. Can we consider that UGA doesn’t control every one we hire and isn’t out to sabotage us at every turn? Can we stop looking at every player and coach who leaves the Institute as a disloyal money hungry monsters? I think some of us are afraid to do that because it would mean… we have to hold ourselves accountable. We would need to hold Georgia Tech accountable.
I’m not saying that Brent Key isn’t the best man to be head football coach at Georgia Tech. I’m not saying that the season can’t be turned around but some things need to change. If this team turns around after the Colorado loss it isn’t going to be because Brent Key and George Godsey are Tech Men. Its going to be because they’re good coaches that made adjustment.
It’s not going to be because the shadow illuminati UGA ran Georgia BOR took their foot off our necks. It will be because Georgia Tech and their fanbase are willing to accept new ideas and change to meet the challenges in front of them.
I’ve just laid out nearly 30 years of Georgia Tech Football History going back to George O’Leary. We’ve talked about the tenure of the last four Head Coaches and how they all converge to a 57% winning percentage. Can we set aside what we think we know or what we think the celling of Georgia Tech athletics is?
Mark Twain said, “It’s not what you don’t know that gets you in trouble. Its what you know for sure that just isn’t so”. So I end with this: What is your expectation for Georgia Tech Football? What do you think is the celling for this team in the next 10 years. That’s a though that makes me hopeful for the future and that 42 year old coke not taste quite so bad.
