Injury designation definitions:
Probable = the league defines a Probable injury designation as a 75% or greater chance of playing. Historically, 95% of players designated probable are active and played on game day.
Questionable = the league defines a Questionable injury designation as being ‘uncertain’ of whether the player will play or not. This replaces
the former definition of having a 50% chance of playing. Historically, 70-75% of players with a Questionable injury designation were active and played on game day.
Doubtful = The league defines a Doubtful injury designation to mean the player is unlikely to participate in the game. In practical terms, teams use the designation when a player has less than a 50% chance to suit up, and active game appearances from this designation remain rare. Historically only around 6% of players with a Doubtful designation are active and played on game day.
Out = will not play. Players with this designation are not active on game day and league rules prohibit them from playing.
Notes on Injured Players
For the Vikings, the running back room has been hit pretty hard. Jordan Mason is on IR, Aaron Jones did not practice with a knee injury he suffered against the Bears, and DeeJay Dallas was limited with a toe injury. It sounds like the Vikings and Jones are doing everything they can to try to get him in shape to play on Sunday afternoon, but we’ll have to wait and see on progress. Kevin O’Connell expressed confidence in Demond Claiborne, the only half-back not on the injury list, to play as necessary- but he’s only had a handful of snaps in two games.
Brett Thorson is also worth monitoring. Hamstring injuries for punters can be tricky to recover from at that position.
Other than that, nothing terribly concerning among the other injuries at this point.
For the Bucs, a couple key injuries to starters Rueban Bain Jr. and Josiah Trotter defensively.
Bain is a rookie first-round draft pick that has gotten off to a slow start with only one tackle in two games and just a 2.6% pass rush win rate. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said he’s probably not completely healthy when asked about his performance so we’ll see if he is active on Sunday against the Vikings. It wouldn’t be terribly surprising if he is dealing with something that is slowing him down- like a groin injury can- if they rested him on Sunday.
Linebacker Josiah Trotter also did not practice with a shoulder injury. He is also a rookie and second-round pick that has graded well after two games. Apparently, he has been wearing a shoulder brace and harness for soreness all year so far. Unclear if that condition has worsened- he did leave the game briefly last week with a shoulder injury- but injury reports tomorrow and Friday should provide more insight.
Stay tuned.
