Rutgers Big Man Gevonte Ware has resigned with the program, according to a post made by the official X account of Rutgers men’s basketball. He is the second Scarlet Knight to officially announced his return to the team after Jamicheal Davis did so yesterday. He returns to Rutgers with 3 years of eligibility remaining.
Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell spoke about Ware’s
return in a press release.
“Gevonte gives us great size, athleticism, and versatility in the frontcourt. He’s a hard worker with a high ceiling, and we’re excited to have him back as he continues to develop in our program.”
Ware appeared in six games for Rutgers in November/ December of last season, seeing time in the Players Era Tournament against high major competition, and against mid major/ low major in the teams other non conference competition. After the start of Big Ten play, Ware was on and off the injury/ availability reports and did not see any in game action for the final three months of the season. In those six games he played, Ware played a total of 36 minutes and averaged 0.3 points and 0.5 rebounds per game on 25.0% from the field.
The 6-foot-9, 255-pounder originally hails from New York but played his senior year of high school down in Charlotte, North Carolina at 1 of 1 Prep Academy. As a senior, Ware averaged 10.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game and led the program to a 22-4 record, which ranked them No.14 in North Carolina.
The Knights will still need to grab a few more big men in the transfer portal, but keeping Ware around gives them the possibility of developing somebody in their system for the future.
