Bayern Munich star Harry Kane had an amazing season with 61 goals and seven assists in 51 games across all competitions this season. Clearly, it was a season that was “award worthy.”
When asked about the possibility of him winning football’s biggest individual honor, the Ballon d’Or, Kane said that he expects to be in the running, but also that it would be a tough field of players to beat out.
“I will definitely be among the favorites. Considering the titles I’ve won this season and the number of goals
I’ve scored, I’ll be in the race. Moreover, if England were to win the World Cup, you can imagine the award going to an English player, although the result of the Champions League final must also be taken into account. When you look at the current Ballon d’Or favorites, there’s Michael Olise, the players who reached the Champions League final and myself,” Kane told L’Equipe (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I saw that the ceremony will be held in London. Maybe that’s a good omen for me. Winning it in my hometown would make it even more special.”
Barring a World Cup title for England, Kane could be facing an uphill battle. Kane’s Bayern Munich teammate Michael Olise will be in the mix and could cause a split in the vote, but Paris Saint-Germain players like Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembélé, João Neves, and Vitinha could all get heavy consideration as well (but could also face a situation where the vote is split as well). All of that could leave room for a player like Arsenal’s Declan Rice to swoop in as well if England does well at the World Cup.
