Wins and losses in the preseason do not matter. The most important thing when it comes to the preseason is evaluating your roster and making decisions as a result to best help your team for when the games actually do count. We all agree.
All of that being said, a win on Friday night for the Dallas Cowboys would matter just a teeny bit.
Cowboys can do something for first time in a while
The Cowboys have been doing a lot of this throughout the preseason.
When they won their first preseason game it was the first time since 2017 that they started the preseason 1-0.
When they won their second game they reached 2-0 status in the preseason for the first time since 2007.
You guessed it, there is something similar on the line should the Cowboys win this week, too.
If the Cowboys win on Friday night then they will go 3-0 in the preseason, obviously, and finish the period with an undefeated record (also obviously). The thing about the previous years listed though is that they, like most of NFL history, are from a time in which the preseason was four games. This makes some of this a bit weird.
With a win on Friday the Cowboys would finish undefeated (3-0 as opposed to 4-0) for the first time in the preseason since 1985. That was over 40 years ago. Way before we knew what The Drought™ was/is.
While the Cowboys haven’t gone undefeated in a preseason since 1985 they have won three games in one as a result of it usually being a four-game variety. The last time that Dallas won at least three games in a single exhibition window was not quite as long ago, it was 2002.
Given that “final” (it will change) 53-man rosters are due by Sunday, the true and ultimate purpose of this game is obviously coming away with enough knowledge to set it with full confidence. But, it would be kind of cool if the Cowboys won and kept erasing droughts of different kinds.
Maybe that would lead to them erasing the ultimate one.
