Bayern Munich Frauen have successfully defended their Supercup title against VfL Wolfsburg.
The reigning German champions and Pokal winners faced league runners-up Wolfsburg in Karlsruhe for the first official match of the season. Despite a patchy preseason that resulted in a win, a draw, and a defeat, Bayern took control of the game from the start and were rewarded for their efforts throughout the 90+ minutes.
Center back Magdalena Eriksson opened the scoring with a left-footed thunderbolt from just
outside the penalty area in the 18th minute. Jovana Damnjanović then doubled the score seven minutes later with a strong run and an even stronger finish from a tight angle, also with her left foot. Bayern thus went into halftime with a two goal cushion.
Wolfsburg dragged themselves back into the game in the 57th minute after a defensive mix-up in the Bayern box following a corner. However, Bayern restored their double advantage fifteen minutes later when Sarah Zadrazil stopped a counterattack attempt and looped the ball into the box, where Lea Schüller was waiting to catch it with her chest and curl a delightful volley into the top right corner.
Things got even better for Bayern when Wolfsburg conceded a penalty and got a red card five minutes later. European Champion Georgia Stanway calmly converted the spot kick to make it 4-1 for the champions. Wolfsburg did pull a goal back through a penalty of their own, but it did little to change the result, and Bayern were content to just control the ball within themselves until the final whistle blew, sealing yet another title for the Bavarians. Lena Oberdorf, who made her first competitive appearance for Bayern after a long injury break, had the honor of lifting the trophy.
Fun fact, the Frauen actually debuted the new third kit ahead of the men’s team, at least in a competitive match. The only time the men have worn it so far has been in the Telekom Cup friendly against Tottenham Hotspur in preseason.
All in all, an excellent result for Bayern. Glückwunsch und gut gemacht, Mädels!
Amid all of the transfer craziness surrounding Bayern Munich’s work with Chelsea over a loan deal for Nicolas Jackson, there was an actual game to be played — and Bayern Munich was up to the task even if a slow start and a midgame loss of focus might have given Die Fuggerstädter some hope.
