We’re back today to get you caught up on the latest from Syracuse’s Olympic Sports including a couple of school records.
Ice Hockey (14-16-4, 10-11-3):
Syracuse split a series at Mercyhurst winning the first game in a shootout before losing 7-0 in game two. The Orange earned the 5th seed in the AHA playoffs and will head to RIT next Saturday for a quarterfinal match-up. The schools split their season series 2-2 and the winner of Saturday’s game will advance to play either Mercyhurst or Penn State.
Softball (4-4):
Syracuse’s bats didn’t travel to Austin for the Bevo Classic. The Orange were able to push 2 runs across in 3 games. It was enough to sneak out a 2-1 win over Abilene Christian thanks to a 6th innning sacrifice fly from Kendall Gaunt. Madison Knight got the win pitching a complete game.
In the other two games, Syracuse lost 14-0 to Texas and 9-0 to Ohio State. The Orange are back in action next weekend at the Liberty Softball Classic.
Track and Field:
After a week off, Syracuse was at Clemson and BU and in the process two school records fell. Elijah Mallard set his 4th Syracuse record of the season with a 46.23 in the 400m while in Boston, Peter Walsdorf broke the indoor 5k record with a time of 13:32.
In Boston, Drew Zundell became the latest Orange to go sub-4 in the mile as he ran 3:59.04. He becomes the 10th runner to eclipse the mark while competing for Syracuse.
Following Walsdorf’s record, Ben Gabelman and Assaf Harari both went under 13:40 and secured top-1o ACC times.
At the Clemson meet, Nicea Jones ran the 400m in 53.79 which is currently 10th best in the ACC. Talea Buxton’s 8.27 in the 60m hurdles ranks 5th best in the conference this season.
Syracuse will be back at Cornell this week in their final meet before the ACC Indoor Championships.
Tennis (4-3):
Syracuse rolled to a 6-1 win over Buffalo. The Orange swept the doubles matches and the only UB victory was at #5 singles.
The team will open ACC play at UNC and Duke this weekend.
