Joshua Kimmich believes Germany has the talent to compete at the highest level, but the national team captain knows there is considerably more to building a successful team than simply collecting talented players.
Speaking about the current state of the German national team, Kimmich emphasized the importance of character, mentality, and a renewed sense of pride in representing the country.
“We have a lot of talent and potential in the team. But talent alone often remains just theoretical. It takes
character and mentality to get the very best out of that talent. I see that as part of my role as captain. We need to rebuild that sense of identification, so that being here and representing the national team feels special to every player. From what I’ve seen over the first few days, everyone seems genuinely happy to be back,” Kimmich told RTL/Sky Germany (via @iMiaSanMia).
That responsibility is particularly important for Kimmich as captain. Germany has endured several disappointing tournament performances in recent years, making a renewed connection between the players and the national team a priority.
Kimmich’s comments suggest that rebuilding Germany will not simply be a matter of finding the right formation or selecting the most talented players. The team needs an identity, commitment, and players who understand what representing Germany should mean.
The early signs, according to Kimmich, are encouraging. If that enthusiasm can translate onto the pitch, Germany may finally be taking an important step toward rediscovering its competitive edge.
