Barcelona have confirmed earlier reports that Frenkie de Jong
has suffered an injury during training and has been sidelined. The club have now issued a statement to confirm the Dutchman has a hamstring problem and say he will be out for 5-6 weeks.
“First-team player Frenkie de Jong sustained an injury to the distal biceps of his right leg during this morning’s training session,” the club said.
“Medical tests have confirmed that the expected recovery period will be approximately five to six weeks.”
It was initially thought De Jong would miss a month but Barca’s statement suggests he might not be back now until the start of April.
The midfielder will therefore miss both legs of Barcelona’s Champions League last 16 match as well as the second leg of the Copa del Rey tie with Atletico.
Hansi Flick will also have to cope without De Jong for La Liga matches against Villarreal, Athletic Club, Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano in La Liga.
