On October 20, 2012, Juventus Stadium hosted a clash that felt less like a mid-autumn league fixture and more like an early referendum on Italian football dominance. Antonio Conte’s side entered Matchday 8 attempting to prove that their unbeaten, surprise 2011–12 Scudetto was no mere flash in the pan. Standing directly across from them was Walter Mazzarri’s ferocious Napoli. Both sides arrived in Turin level at the top of the table, each boasting identical records of six wins and a draw from their opening
seven fixtures.
Juventus lined up in what would soon become the unmistakable blueprint of their era-defining dominance. With Marco Storari stepping into goal for an injured Gianluigi Buffon, the backline was anchored by the legendary ‘BBC’ trio — Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, and Giorgio Chiellini. Stephan Lichtsteiner and Kwadwo Asamoah patrolled the flanks, while the formidable midfield of Arturo Vidal, Andrea Pirlo, and Claudio Marchisio pulled the strings. Up front, Sebastian Giovinco and Fabio Quagliarella led the line in Conte’s signature 3-5-2.
While the final scoreline suggested a comfortable afternoon for the hosts, the match sat on a razor’s edge for 80 excruciating minutes. Early on, Napoli nearly landed a knockout blow. In the 26th minute, Edinson Cavani whipped a vicious free kick from the edge of the penalty area that beat Storari clean, only to crash off the corner of the woodwork. Beyond that moment of heart-in-mouth drama, the first half degenerated into an intense tactical chess match, with both sides combining for just six total shot attempts and a single shot inside either box.
The second half brought far more urgency. Just three minutes after the restart, Pirlo began testing Napoli’s resolve, forcing a sharp save from another trademark free kick. Seven minutes later, Asamoah found Giovinco inside the box with room to turn, but the Formica Atomica dragged his effort inches wide of the far post. In the 65th minute, Pirlo floated a stunning, pinpoint long ball over the top to sub Alessandro Matri, who tantalizingly failed to cushion the drop in what would have been a clear 1-v-1 with the keeper.
As time ticked away, the match begged for a moment of raw inspiration. It arrived in the 80th minute.
Earning a corner on the left, Pirlo curled a perfectly placed delivery directly into the heart of the six-yard box. Substitute Martín Cáceres timed his run to perfection, rising above a crowded penalty area to thunder a header past Morgan De Sanctis and shatter the deadlock.
Before Napoli could even process the blow, Juventus delivered the lethal knockout. Just two minutes later, a blocked Giovinco shot spilled out toward the edge of the area. A 19-year-old Paul Pogba — having come off the bench just moments earlier — tracked the high bounce and struck a pristine, chest-high volley through a sea of bodies, beating De Sanctis at the near post to send Juventus Stadium into delirium.
In the end, two sides sitting atop the table — who would ultimately finish first and second at the season’s conclusion — fought to an absolute standstill for eighty minutes. But champions are defined by how they command the margin between parity and victory. In those final ten minutes, Juventus didn’t just win a high-stakes fixture. They asserted their dominance, bent their primary rival to their will, and laid the permanent foundation for a nine-year empire.
